Piles are usually required where the soil immediately below ground level is too soft or unstable to bear the load imposed by a building or other structure. Here, deep foundations are necessary to ‘drill’ down to deeper layers of earth or rock which do have greater bearing capacity. Typically made from reinforced concrete or steel, and sometimes wood, piles are columns that spread the load of a building evenly across the ground and provide stability to the finished structure.

Piles are either driven or bored into the ground, and different types serve different purposes. Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) is one of the most common methods of installing bored piles, used on soft strata, water-bearing ground or environmentally sensitive sites, for instance, because of the low levels of vibration caused when drilling down to fit the columns .King Post piles are an example of these.

Mini-piles have a smaller diameter than piles and are used where access is restricted, for example when carrying out underpinning or refurbishment work on an existing structure. Helical Shire piles are an example of these.
