What Steps Do Groundworks Entail?
The first stage is clearing the land of anything that might impede on the building process. Any older building on the land that’s no longer required must be demolished. Unwanted debris and soil must be removed, along with any waste that has built up, and undergrowth and trees. This must all be disposed of responsibly, with masonry and other materials being reused and waste material being recycled where possible.
Next, access routes for construction vehicles, workers and materials might be laid, depending on the site, and utilities installed if necessary. The foundations will be laid out in accordance with the architect’s plans; then constructed. Depending on the type of ground and soil, these might be trench fill foundations or strip foundations.
Groundworkers will then install drainage, both to keep water away from the foundations and for the resulting property, to connect it to the mains system. Only then, when all this is in place, can construction workers begin to lay the first bricks. Groundworking teams will then often return to the project after building is complete to install access pathways or a driveway to a residential property, for instance.
